NO SHADE IN BEAUTY

In a recent speech she made at the Essence Black Women in Hollywood Luncheon where she was an honoree, she shared a motivating story of a young dark skinned woman wrote to her because she wanted to change the color of her skin to be accepted socially, but instead, she found hope and decided not to lighten her skin as she was inspired by Lupita.
 

Lupita also shared of how she too felt unbeautiful as a teenager since she was teased and taunted because of her night shaded skin. Her complexion was always an obstacle she had to overcome.  Later in her life, she was inspired by her mother and an eminent model Alek Wek who was a dark skinned model that graced the runways of top fashion designers and was on the cover of top fashion magazines.

She explained in her circle there was a preference for lighter skinned persons and that she was amazed to see how everyone embraced a dark skinned woman like herself who resembled her so much and called her beautiful.
 

Lupita stressed that what is fundamentally important is compassion for yourself and those around you. She hoped that her presence on the screen and in magazines can help other young women on a similar journey that they may feel beautiful not only on the outside but most importantly on the inside as well because there is no shade in that type of beauty.
